Into Thin Air
Site Specific Installation | Agar | Metal | PigmentsMicroecosystems, Urban Aerobiome, Companion species, symbiotic network
Into Thin Air considers microbes to be a key interface between the body and the environment. Something that reflects the co-constitution of human and non-human worlds. The installation aims to explore the symbiotic links of humans and other organisms through the lens of microbial imaginations. Made out of impressive curtains of thousands of petri dishes that represent a cross-section of layers of air, it forms an urban air archive and a floating microbial ecosystem. Hidden in the layers are dishes with agar that capture invisible particles in the air and thus represent the microbial footprint.
Into Thin air, was commissioned by Stichting Schemerlicht for Schemerelicht Festival 2022 and developed in collaboration with Studio Smink, Amsterdam
Cities are host to trillions of invisible residents whose lives are intertwined with our own. Factors like green space, soil exposure, architecture, wastewater composition, geography and climate influence the type of microbes that survive within urban landscapes. As a result, no two cities have the same microbiome
