For centuries the gestures of cows, farmers and the soil made landscapes into the lush meadows we are slowly but surely ceasing to admire. Massive transitions in our food systems will retire their bodies and welcome a new historic chapter of “land-building”. But our bodies, and the gestures with which we used to imagine and design our lives with the land have been largely displaced by technologies. How can we retrieve these gestures that our bodies no longer perform? How can we learn new ones? A machine learning model tries to classify and categorize their voice, tonality and accent in an attempt to produce a speech profile for every word uttered. At the same time, the performer(s) hacks into various inaccessible online archives and databases in an attempt to retrieve accent and speech related materials. A live audiovisual composition created through archival and machine learning imaginations. Using metaphors, parables and vicarious encounters with the farms’ rhythms, the work involves viewers in forms of expression possible at farms. Machines for Self care is supported by Stroom Den Haag and is co-developed with Samar Khan A meeting with a linguist that listens to cows inspired Samar to conduct fieldwork at Utrecht local dairy farm.
